BOOK TO FILM FROM HOME

GATEWAY FILM CENTER PRESENTS FROM BOOK TO FILM FROM HOME

Explore a curated selection of films streaming inspired by kid-friendly books

Columbus, Ohio, July 31, 2020 – Gateway Film Center and longtime partner Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) are bringing this celebrated family film series online. The series will start Saturday, August 1 with weekly selections revealed on Saturdays throughout the month of August.

Designed to encourage a love of literacy and film at a young age, From Book To Film is Gateway Film Center’s signature summer movie series inspired by some of your families’ favorite books. Since 2012, more than 21,000 Film Center visitors have received complimentary admissions to in-person screenings in the series.

“We created From Book to Film to help fill a need for more affordable summer activities for families in our community,” said Chris Hamel, President of Gateway Film Center. “With COVID-19 cancelling in-person activities, that mission is more important than ever. By introducing this new online viewing experience, we hope more people can discover these great films.”

The new From Book to Film from Home series features films that are all available online for free or on subscription streaming platforms. Also new to the series this year is a selection of short films adapted from books to accompany the feature-length films.

Many selections in the lineup are available on Kanopy, a streaming platform that Columbus Metropolitan Library cardholders can access free-of-charge. Those who do not have a library card can apply for one online. Families can access additional content through personal Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney+ accounts.

Several From Book to Film favorites have made the list for this From Home edition, including Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971). This new, online edition also allows for series premieres of films that have historically been unavailable for theatrical exhibition.

Weekly lineups will be promoted throughout the month of August on the Film Center’s website. This year’s From Book to Film from Home program is supported in part by Puffin Foundation West, PNC and the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Department. Gateway Film Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, receives ongoing support from the Ohio Arts Council, Greater Columbus Arts Council, Campus Partners, and The Columbus Foundation.

“Film is storytelling, and it’s a powerful medium. We are grateful to have had the community’s support over the years and are excited to bring this series online,” said Hamel. “Whether it offers you the chance to rewatch your favorite film, introduces you to a film or gives you an opportunity to see and talk about the film with your kids, we hope you feel welcomed to join us.”

The safety of visitors and team members is a priority for the Film Center and CML. Since the beginning of the pandemic, both organizations have focused on providing new educational and engaging opportunities to serve the community at home.

Information on virtual screenings can be found on the Film Center’s website at gatewayfilmcenter.org and on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
