A Grant for the continuing work on the Somali Documentary Project, with a special interest in following the Diaspora of a family that photographer and documentarian Abdi Roble first met in Malta who are now living in Columbus, OH has been found to meet the criteria of Puffin Foundation West, Ltd. (PFW). We were truly impressed with the nature of this undertaking and the long-term commitment that Mr. Roble, Professor Douglas Rutledge and Mr. Tariq Tarey have made to this epic project. For close to a decade they have served history by documenting the mass flight of Somalis in their attempt to flee their homeland to escape a vicious civil war. Their work of over 100,000 photographs and commentary and videography has created an unparalleled record of the experience of not only of Somalis but it can be transposed to the life-threatening journeys of any who have left their homeland trying to save their families from brutal regimes. This has proven to be an important and epic work that has produced enlightening adjunct programming that has helped education and create understanding within many host communities that Somalis have now settled in across the USA.
