THE HUMANS THAT WE ARE

VOICES UNBROKEN

Caits Meissner has written with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people. These experiences create pathways so that we can witness the inherent worth and dignity in all people, inspiring lives of greater contribution. Prison is a system that thrives on punitive measures and the dehumanization of those under state control. Where can freedom be found in an unfree space? Creativity not only provides an escape but also a reclamation of agency. While teaching at prisons, Ms. Meissner has been able to fully grasp the transformative power of the imagination. Prisoners can find themselves, suddenly, on a river or a beach, feel the sunlight or feel the touch of grass on their feet.
