Puffin Foundation West, Lid. made a charitable gift of$250,000 to Duke University for the benefit of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute,
Duke Signature Care, and the Child Abuse and Neglect Medical Evaluation Clinic in the Duke School of Medicine. On behalf of all associated with the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, it is my pleasure to thank you for the generous gift from Puffin Foundation West. Ltd.
The Duke Human Vaccine Institute (DHVT) is a national and international leader in researching and developing vaccines to protect against infectious diseases. Our work includes research. development and trials for vaccines for many infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. influenza and SARS-CoV-2. We were on the front lines of researching, developing, and testing COVID-19 vaccines, and in January of this year, we received a federal contract to manufacture aan-coronavirus vaccine candidate to be tested in a phase 1 clinical trial. A vaccine that can prevent infections by viruses related to SARS-CoV-2 would be an impactful first step toward preventing all life-threatening coronavirus human infections. The vaccine being produced in this contract
was the first broadly reactive coronavirus vaccine reported. The antibodies induced by this vaccine neutralize all current SARS CoV-2 variants of concern, and our hope is to move this vaccine into the clinic later this year.
The gift from Puffin Foundation West will be used to help advance the research, development, testing, and delivery of new vaccines and therapies for COVID-19 and other emerging public health threats. I look forward to keeping you updated on our efforts and welcome any questions you may have about our work.
Once again, please accept my heartfelt thanks for your support it makes a tremendous difference at Duke, helping to further the University’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, service, and patient care On behalf of the many people who benefit from your generosity, we thank you.
