Gun violence disproportionately disproportionately impacts young people, including here in Ohio. Because of the violent culture that surrounds them, many of our youth have difficulty envisioning a path in life that does not include violence, and we lose so many of them too soon.
Picture Peace seeks to challenge the culture of violence and fear, and instead inspire a culture of peace. Children engage in interactive dialogue about gun violence and the value of being positively engaged in their communities. We invite them to respond to the topic of gun violence through the artistic medium of their choice, submit their completed work to an art contest, and honor them for their participation in the program at an awards ceremony, further increasing their commitment to nonviolence. Finally, we display Picture Peace artwork at public art shows that impact the larger community. This year, community support brought Picture Peace to two sites in Columbus and expanded the program to Toledo and Cleveland.
