HELPING TO BRING ART IN THE GARDEN
The Highland Youth Garden has been an oasis in the Hilltop community for 8 years. They have focused on teaching youth in this low income area about where their food comes from. This year in celebration of the Harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables they will be painting a mural on the storage shed on sit. Artist Melvin Robinson, a local artist and a man who has advocated for children to learn about gardening as created a beautiful design. The youths that work this garden will be invited to work along side Mr. Robinson on this mural which will be a wonderful addition to the community. This is a community where 97% of the 350 students who attended the elementary school received free or reduced lunches and that average family income is $22,000 , This community is a THE FOOD DESERT. The Highland Youth Garden has over 200 children in the garden each week who learn how to grow their own food in their own backyards and also learn about the environment.
