YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS’ THEATRE (YPT) inspires students to realize the power of their own voices through playwriting. YPT http://wwwyptdc.orghas for 22 years offered in-school and after-school programming FREE of charge in underserved communities of color to provide equitable access to arts education in our Nation’s capitol. YPT provides a window into the lives of their students, and the audience also can pay-what-you-want for tickets to these performances . The Silence is Violence programs which started in 2015 were prompted by the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Tamir Rice. Seats were filled with overflow audiences. Post-performance talkbacks s found that the attendees were grateful to hear students using the arts to discuss important issues. This year Silence is Violence will work with immigrant communities to discuss the concept of identity through poetry.
