Valerie Coleman, the founder, composer and flutist of the Imani Winds will present compositions expressing her African American heritage on April 7th at the Cutting Edge Concerts New Music Festival in the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre in Manhattan. Her compositions relate to the African Diaspora and will be of interest to a wider audience than the traditional Eurocentric mainstay of most classical music events. Welltone New Music, a NFP 501 (c)(3) produces the Cutting Edge Concerts New Musical Festival, which is a month-long series featuring the music of living composers and is hosted by Artistic Director, Victoria Bond, a composer, conductor and pianist. This is the 16th annual Festival, which is an important cultural event that often supports young up-and coming musicians of our times. The event will also be streamed on Cutting Edge Concerts’ website. Valerie Coleman will also discuss her works on stage and it will give the audience a rate opportunity to meet this creative, innovative African American woman composer, whose music brings together diverse cultural elements.
