2015 is a year for deep reflections. It has been FIFTY years since the Vietnamese War began and Puffin West has helped to memorialize that gash that cut through the lives of 100,000’s of 1000’s of lives with the Pulitzer Prize winning photographic show continuing at Dublin Arts Center entitled Eddie Adams: Vietnam.
It is SEVENTY years since the decision was made to drop Atomic Bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki which ended WWII and ultimately argued that military action saved a million lives but brought death and destruction of 170,000 men, women, children and all other creatures immediately in the 5000 degree inferno and over the course of the following two weeks. To memorialize that point in time, a weekend of events is planned.
In these days with all the issues surrounding IRAN and their capacity to create new Nuclear Weapons we wonder why photographs of what a nuclear holocaust truly looks like are not brought front and center into our consciousness the news. Growing up in the nuclear age which included ducking and covering, bomb shelters as an option for purchase to be implanted in your back yard, being afraid to drink milk as there was strontium 90 found in the food chain from above ground atmospheric testing, the Cuban Missile Crisis, millions of Americans living at Ground Zero we have to wonder and keep the conversation going as to why we still embrace annihilation as a solution to anything including the extinction of all living species that are all desperately trying to survive. The hunting of iconic animals has made us all think about extinction. Keep thinking!
