CENTENNIAL OF THE 19TH AMENDMENT

August 26, 2020 will be the Centennial of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote and it also made women legally equal before the law. Imagine a time when women could not own property, could not receive a paycheck for their own work and in many professions had to quit when they got married.  PFW gave a grant to a teacher in Anchorage Alaska who will print  a chapbook for his female students called “The Contract”. The Contract is a poem between a college- age girl lamenting to her   mother  that “boys have it made”.  The mother replies and threads the needle  that  links  her daughter to the work that  her  great grandmother did as she   fought tooth and nail, street by neighborhood, precinct by state to get the 19th Amendment into the United States Constitution. What you make of yourself in this world is up to you as your great grandmother made it possible for you to be a success- but you have to do the hard work.
