URBAN FARMING

Since 2007 Franklinton Farms in the heart of Columbus, OH has provided fresh and local produce to some of the city’s poorest and underserved.  “When you give dignity to people who have been treated like trash their entire lives, I think that nothing  but positive is going to come from that”, says founding member Heather Mohrman and the 750-1500 annual volunteers and individuals from the greater Columbus area agree!  They have been given a grant to  “BEAUTIFY SULLIVANT.”

The need for beauty  on Sullivant Avenue is  because of the prevalence of sex trafficking, opioid overdose and vacant homes.  Over 7% of all solicitation arrests occurred literally in front of their farm’s new pollinator’s garden.  The mural will be done  by Heidi Clifford who shares the Mission of food justice and community art.   What the mural can say….hmmmm  “veggies LOVE you” or “grow your own” or nothing BEETS local” or SPROUT it out loud”  In recent years there has been a resurgence in the surrounding areas, promoting a safer neighborhood and exciting the residents.  A long-time resident says: “Pick up the trash, fix the sidewalks, fix up or get rid of the boarded up houses.  That will at least restore some pride in the neighborhood.” Restoring PRIDE is exactly what Franklinton Farms aims to do by placing their mural on Sullivant to brighten the community.    This is the second mural PFW has partnered with Franklinton Farms. www.franklintonfarms.org
