“Everyone is unique, driven by dreams, goals and aspirations; whether it is to become someone influential, to seek a new future, study, marry or just have a roof. One’s perceptions of life are so different yet so important. Growing up in a developing country one comes to comprehend how valuable resources are like; having water, electricity and most important food security. Yet some families are unable to provide their young with these priorities and as result find themselves or their offspring in desperate need to migrate. Unfortunately, many perish in the intent or sadly are caught in human trafficking. Never again to be found or heard from. This reality is rising at an unprecedented rate. This situation resonates so strongly, and as an artist I find the need to portray the importance of cultural identity from the female gender and raise a voice through my art work, to convey a message of the represented female in portraits that could be perceived as to be a sister, a friend, a cousin or an acquaintance. It is a collective responsibility to share consciousness, raise awareness and help someone who desperately seeks help.”
“The goal of this project is to encourage connections between the community and individuals to understand how human trafficking affects families, persons and a life. Whether it is a child, teenager or an adult. A situation that occurs at any given time, place and affects someone and others. And, even though males are affected, mainly the female gender suffers the adversity of being exploited, and deprived from hope and freedom. In most cases when immigrating from developing countries, females are separated from their families, dreams and liberty by human trafficking groups or individuals, which abruptly force them or drug them away.
Adorable Monique –Florida based artist coordinated this project in association with community learning centers; local libraries, community centers and outreach programs, presenting rotating exhibits and printed material that raised awareness to this rising matter.
The artist is grateful for the received Grant support, provided by the Puffin West Foundation. Which allowed for this project to be successful.
