PFW reaches across the nation!
On August 12-13 the NCRC&DC handed out hundreds of packages of free seeds of perennial and annual wildflowers that provide forage for native bees and honeybees. They explained the needs that bees have for multi-season blooms to forage nectar and pollen, water to drink, nesting areas, and safety from pesticides. Bee houses could be had for modest donations, and they explained many times how to DIY and make one at one at home out of simple materials and tools.
Their Bee Patches program fit well with the Gravenstein Apple Festival’s theme of bees this year, and they conducted outreach on both days for this great environmental education and action program working with local Girl Scout troops. They now have twelve patches planted in Sonoma County, and more are planned. This program helps to build leadership and science skills and they work with all ages of girls in this pollinator habitat planting program. They hope to work with other youth groups to expand this program first throughout our 4-county area, then across the nation.
