BIG BOOST FOR FOOD SECURITY – A GEM OF A PROJECT AT THE PEARL MARKET

Capital Crossroads Special Improvement District (“SID”) produces Pearl Market each year from mid-May to late October. It operates on Tuesdays and Fridays and generally includes 12 to 15 farmers who sell fresh produce, cheese, and meat.   In 2013, the Market drew an average of 3,900 people on each of 48 Market days.

The Pearl Market has accepted the Ohio Directions Card for a number of years.   With support from the Puffin Foundation West in 2013, Pearl Market began offering a dollar-for-dollar match for Ohio Directions Card purchases.   As a result of the match, use of the Ohio Directions Card at the Pearl Market increased steadily throughout the summer to meet the demand for fresh food.

Puffin West has awarded the SID a grant of $10,000 to match Ohio Directions Card purchases at the 2014 Pearl Market.   This availability of fresh and local produce to the surrounding inner city neighborhoods is enhanced as these neighborhoods are all served by public transportation that stops within a block of the market. In addition to aiding in food security this grant always translates to more sales to our local farmers and growers.
