THE DELAWARE YOUTH CENTER- CALLICOON, NEW YORK

The wonderful thing about opening up Grant Applications is sometimes inside the envelope is pure gold. The Delaware Youth Center’s application was 24K. Located in a very rural dairy farm area in New York State near the Pennsylvania border, where many households work two jobs and still have very limited incomes, this Center founded in the 1930’s and is a true resource. They asked for $400 for a summer youth program that will explore social issues and their environment through collage. Their budget included 1 gallon of modge podge glue and 4 packs of felt as the youth center still had some glue on hand and will supply scissors, brushes and boxes.   They do not need any other funding for supplies as the materials will all come from recylcables that they will then upcycle to create collages on topics such as the environment, ecology, and the river that runs through their town.  The artist, Eric Hart, will work with the children this summer as they express how they feel and think about the world through their creations. Ms. Hart is a social activist artist and uses her art to explore, raise consciousness, teach and respond to social issues.  She has participated in shows such as Fracking Art and Activism. Incorporating the enviroment and education along with recycling is always an important goal of the Center every year.  The Delaware Youth Center is a meeting place, a place to learn and have fun, and a place to celebrate community and all its diversities. Isn’t this a place that we all want to visit? www.delawareyouthcenter.org.
