Faces of Franklinton Community Art Project: The unveiling of the completed mural, which hangs on the front of Sign House, will happen during the studio openings. This artwork is a “self portrait” of the real residents of Franklinton. During this project, which has been ongoing all summer, forty neighbors and community members -some artists, some adults, and many children – painted their likenesses on weather-resistant signboard. This collection of faces is now assembled into a single artwork; the names of the participants and the streets on which they live all lovingly documented. Funded by the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, Puffin Foundation West, and Franklinton Arts District, this project’s purpose is to empower and include the actual long-time residents of Franklinton in the “creative community” now envisioned here, and to act as a visual reminder to the rest of Columbus that these are the people that need to be taken into consideration whenever redevelopment in the area is discussed.
