A new friend, NEW NOISE, has joined our Puffin West family. A grant was awarded to them for their intoxicating food-based theatrical performance entitled JUBILEE. This New Orleans ensemble will use the familiarity of a home cooked (NOLA) feast to stage a purposefully uncomfortable conversation about RACE in the American South. JUBILEE is an opportunity for white Southerners and people of color to sit down at a massive banquet table – being their seats for this play – and get caught up in a conversation that is started by six actors who are exploring and recollecting their “family legacy”: being tales of land, love, race, gender, birth and death both glorious and painful. The audience by virtue of being at this collective feast begins to join in the conversation that is grappling with the troubles of the South including white supremacy, slavery, subjugation, poverty, resistance, and freedom. New Noise is not content to wait until white supremacy to just die out, but believes it is their duty to join in the work to undo racism. JUBILEE opens a space of inquiry and the opportunity for dialogue around whiteness that is imperative to securing a more just future.
