Community Matters in Cincinnati, OH was provided a grant for a neighborhood artists group The Collective and their collaboration on THE BLACK AMERICAN TREE PROJECT. It is an immersive experience rooted in storytelling, that educates audiences about the legacies of slavery in modern American society. The project is based upon historical and qualitative research following the journey of Black Americans from pre-colonial to present day. It explores slavery’s historical and current effects on housing, the medical-industrial complex, prison system, education, education and other American societal areas in which Black Americans are affected. The Collective will compile interviews of unique oral histories of Black residents who live in the Lower Price Hill neighborhood. Founded in 2014, Community Matters has deep roots in the Lower Price Hill community, developed from the over forty years of work by its sister organization, Education Matters. Community Matters was created from the will of the Lower Price Hill community to address the disparities caused by systemic inequities in our community.www.cmcincy.org
