Puffin Foundation West, Ltd. (PFW) is pleased to have been able to give grassroots seed money for Andrea Hart’s mixed-media performance piece entitled: dark is a different beast: a performance within a sculpture within an installation. Ms. Hart is collaborating with sculptor Jesse Bercowetz (one of his pieces is pictured above), for visual structure set design and large-scale puppetry; composer, Aleksandra Vrebalov, for the score; and butoh practitioner Andrew Braddock to bring structure to the actors’ movement. This ensemble has come together to bring to the audience a performance piece which, actually is a love story that takes place in a post-catastrophe wasteland. A Woman and Bonfire fall in love. As they navigate the ups and downs of passion in the time of war, a mob of World Powers seeks to gain control of the fire to expand their boundaries and by doing so threatens the lovers’ personal destiny. The music of Aleksandra Vrebalov underpins the (at times) intimate and tender moments, as well as the sci-fi and extraterrestrial qualities of the script.
