PFW continues to support our Backbone Campaign friends in Vashon, Washington. Their call for a flotilla of kayakers, now known forever as KAYAKTIVISTS to blockade Shell Oil’s Polar Pioneer drilling rig and other vessels from getting to the Arctic has forever changed the way normal and ordinary people can stand up to a giant oil corporation. The bottom line is that Kayaktivism fed the physical and spiritual well being of those hundred who participated on the water off the coasts of Seattle and Portland. It built community and enabled bold, courageous and peaceful action. It was a David and Goliath moment that the world presses took notice of. Needless to say Arctic drilling is now toxic to Shell Oil’s brand. Our 2016 grant was given to help them take the lessons that they learned and apply them to fossil fuel resistance and other climate justice campaigns across the country. There is even discussions now with Ohio Citizen Action to bring them to Ohio to take on the frackers using artful activism.
