By September 2015 the Backbone Campaign had trained hundreds of people in what became known as KAYAKTIVISM in the Seattle and Portland areas. They initiated or supported at least 14 creative actions on the water. Some of these actions shattered the barriers in the public imagination about how normal people would stand up to a giant oil corporation. The Kayaktivists’ actions resulted in unprecedented global news coverage of Arctic drilling (sHELL NO!) and its negative cultural, ecological and climatic effects. This was artful activism at one of its finest demonstrations. The Backbone Campaign will take what they learned and bring this form of activism to different communities that are, for instance, pushing for damn removal to restore salmon, or trying to stop the transportation of crude and dirty tar sands by rail, pipeline or tanker.www.backbonecampaign.org
