PFW has again sent a grassroots grant to The Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) that produces a month long series entitled UPTOWN SHAKESPEARE in the 1400 seat amphitheater in Marcus Garvey Park in Manhattan. Each year CTH creates a unique Harlem experience for an ethnically and generationally diverse audience of over 12,000 people. This year they have chosen to produce Shakespeare’s MACBETH. During the course of the run, CTH will continue neighborhood art partnerships with Jazzmobile, which provides pre-show jazz concerts on Friday evenings, and Art In Flux, which curates a related visual arts exhibition in the neighborhood featuring local artists. All of these arts experiences are presented barrier-free to the community and create new platforms for neighbors from a broad range of backgrounds to come together to generate a renewed enthusiasm for Harlem’s cultural life. This year one of the project goals is for a Harlem Teen Shakespeare Initiative for students aged 12-18 that live and/or attend school surrounding Marcus Garvey Park. This intensive opens the door of artistic expression for Harlem youth by introducing them to a new set of creative tools. http://cthnyc.org
