THE MASSILLON (OHIO) Museum is creating a 468 square foot accessible space with ancillary programming for all visitor with physical, developmental cognitive or learning disabilities. It will be open during all museum hours and will be outfitted specifically for individuals that re often marginalized owing to their special needs. “For many with special needs, the arts are not merely enrichment, but a staple..The arts provide opportunities to develop language, cognition, fine and gross motor skills, social and life skills, self esteem and self expression and even the opportunity to provide potential career paths” (Arts and Autism, Ohio Arts Council, 2015). Erin Hoppe, the ED of VSA Ohio will be a consultant and PFW will help in the purchase of some interactive sensory-based materials. MASSMU will promote their project to all the school in the district offering free filed opportunities. The Museum has other partners including the Philmatheon Society of the Blind which will create braille labels for all exhibits.
