MUSIC FOR THE MOUNTAINS, a benefit concert to be held at Southgate House in Newport KY on October 12th. This event featuring 21 bands is being hosted by Ohio Citizen Action (OCA) and Kentuckians for the Commonwealth to call attention to mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia and it will raise money for these not for profit groups to continue their campaigns against this most destructive form of strip mining. Mountaintop removal is just as it sounds. Mining companies use explosives to blow off the tops of mountains to gain access to underground coal seams. This has consequences to the environment, predominantly in the toxification of watersheds, the loss of biodiversity and, it creates airborne toxins and dust. Major scientific studies have linked higher rates of cancer, birth defects and increased pubic health costs to this pollution of our streams and air. Many of the streams that are being polluted by mountaintop removal are the headwaters of the Ohio River, which provides drinking water to 5 million people.
