The history of an organization begins in the minds and hearts of caring individuals and it is out of their convictions, ideals and tenacity that it unfolds. In 1935, Dr. Roy Burkhart, Senior Minister of First Community Church and Judge Mahaffey worked with community leaders and the Franklin County Juvenile Court to establish and fund a neighborhood center in the near southeast community.
Incorporated in 1936, Central Community House was originally located on East Mound Street in Columbus, Ohio. We remained there for 30 years, until moving to our former location at 1251 Bryden Road in 1965. In the late 1960’s we collaborated with the City of Columbus to add a child care facility in the Blackburn Recreation Center, several blocks away from our main facility. The child care center remained at this location from 1969 until April 22, 2005 when it was finally relocated with the main.
Last year Central Community House served over 6,800 individuals.
CCH is a multi-service community center focusing on youth and family programs and neighborhood support and development initiatives. By highlighting the assets of our community residents, we serve as a bridge of transition between dependency and self-sufficiency. Our primary aim is to address the issues that promote stronger children, stronger families and ultimately, stronger communities. They provide a wide variety of programs and services at both our main facility and the child care center. Donate to this great local NFP!
