Democracy Now! is a national, daily, INDEPENDENT, award-winning news program hosted by journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez and is heard on our Community Radio Station WCRS-FM @ 102.1 98.3 every weekday at 5p. Puffin Foundation West is the major sponsor for these daily independent news hour broadcasts. Democracy Now!’s War and Peace Report provides the listening audience with access to people and perspectives rarely heard in the U.S. corporate-sponsored media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people from around the world who are directly affected by U.S. foreign policy, grassroots leaders and peace activists, artists, academics and independent analysts. In addition, Democracy Now! hosts real debates–debates between people who substantially disagree, such as between the White House or the Pentagon spokespeople on the one hand, and grassroots activists on the other. AMY GOODMAN SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER. SO YOU MAY ASK WHY DO WE NEED INDEPENDENT MEDIA? For true democracy to work, people need easy access to independent, diverse sources of news and information. Over the last two decades we have seen unprecedented corporate media consolidation. In the early 1980s fifty media conglomerates dominated all media outlets, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, music, publishing and film. Now just six corporations dominated the U.S. media and their independence is compromised in the U.S. and they are legally responsible to their shareholders to maximize profits. In contrast, Democracy Now! is the only public media program in the country that airs simultaneously on radio, satellite and cable television, and the internet. Democracy Now! became an independent non-profit organization in June 2002. The program is currently broadcast on over 1,000 public television and radio stations and is growing daily.
