THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN SELECTED TO BE PART OF GCAC’S POWER2GIVE CAMPAIGN WHICH DOUBLES YOUR DONATION IN SUPPORT OF THIS POWERFUL PLAY AND PHOTOGRAPHIC RETROSPECTIVE. OUR OWN CABOT REA IS STARRING THIS THIS PRODUCTION TOO! :
The Northland Performing Arts Center (NPAC) is presenting South Pacific (starring Cabot Rea), produced in conjunction with Vaud-Villities and Imagine Productions. Prior to every performance, a short presentation will focus on the musical‘s pioneering challenge to racism and promotion of diversity and non-traditional families and relationships. This is a particularly fitting theme at this time and in the midst of Northland, with its status as the largest “immigration gateway” in a multi-state region. In 1949, Rodgers & Hammerstein resisted strong criticism and pressure to remove from the show the song “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught”. It’s powerful message continues to resonate in relation to hate and intolerance including race, religion, sexuality, gender, and the like.
Concurrently, Otterbein University will bring to the NPAC lobby its art exhibit: “Looking Back: A Retrospective of the Work of Kojo Kamau”. Kojo is internationally recognized photographer and this exhibition will include photographs, both color and black and white, reflecting his five decades working in the medium. The exhibition addressed themes that run throughout the photographer’s career such as community, travels, portraits of local and international artists and musicians, and political and social issues.
This project has two main goals:
- Present a quality combined performing arts and fine art program in the culturally under-served Northland community; and,
- Sustain NPAC as a performing arts and event center that regularly brings thousands of people into Northland for a broad array of arts programs and community events.
South Pacific will be presented on the evenings of October 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22, with matinees on October 16 and 23. In addition, a Community Gala will be held before the show on October 20 to bring the Northland community together to experience and celebrate the production and exhibit. Plus your philanthropy will be recognized! http://power2give.org/centraloh
