THE HIGHWAY is a short animated film by Jennifer Crystal Chien that recreates in part and in a miniature scale a highway protest against police violence. While some Americans may think that this is a protected right, being Freedom of Assembly, we believe that PFW should also stimulate conversations. Controversial expressions that are articulated by using ART we feel is using the perfect peaceful medium. Throughout time civic and social issues have been brought to light in literature, philosophy, lyrics, music, poetry and film. What a perfect way to open a serious conversation up than to use TOYS. The scenes of Ms. Chien’s movie include The Boston Tea Party being the”British” colonists in 1773 protesting the taxation on tea without their representation. Some feel that this was the beginning of the British colonists’ movement towards the Revolutionary War. Ms. Chien also sets out other scenes including portraying a seance by the white spiritualist and abolitionist, Achsa Sprage and the workers’ rights February Revolution in France in 1848 which first used street blockades. An audio landscape will weave a mosaic of sounds being voicers from memorials, protest events, and readings from authors.
