Received a grant that to allow them to share with the 2-3,000 full time primarily white residents aspects of black cultural history of the primarily black population that lives off-island. They have previously presented “The Folk Music of African Americans” performed by the prominent opera singer and educator DeVonna Rowe who gave the World Premiere performance of George Walker’s “Five Songs for Piano and Voice” during a National Black American Music Conference. The Island Theatre was built in 1946 and is a regional landmark celebrating the Island’s heritage. In 2011 a NFP was created to rescue the Theatre from demolition and to operate a cultural arts venue to provide film, performing arts, cultural education and other entertainment that increases the breadth and quality of the cultural experiences. The grant will also be used to give free tickets to off islanders who may not be aware of this Black History Money program of the Island Theatre on Chinocteague Island.
