The Franklinton Preparatory Academy’s steel band under the direction of teacher Sam McCoy in its two short years as preformed before 1000’s. Music as an art form is truly a universal language spoken everywhere on earth but is it unfortunately missing from urban schools, especially charter schools. The steel pan is an instrument that was born out of extreme poverty in Trinidad but is not changing the world. It is an example of turning trash into treasure. Steel pan is the ultimate in recycling and repurposing for a greater good. The students also study of Calypso music, which has served as a forum for the expression of social and political views within the Caribbean. The music and song speaks about inequality, racism, poverty and oppression. Studying this music shows directly how music can be used in any culture to effect societal change.
