YOUTH BEAT RADIO gives young people a voice in their community. All Youth Beat Radio programs are created by students and therefore gives them a voice in the community that is heard weekly on Columbus’ own community radio station WCRS* @ 98.3 and 105.5 FM. Youth Beat’s goal is to inform others about youth activities, improve schools, neighborhoods, communities, and the environment. CITY YEAR’S Mission is to build democracy through citizen service, civic leadership and social entrepreneurship. This will be a dynamic PARTNERSHIP!
Through this collaboration, students will have the opportunity to learn and produce shows, plan show content, coordinate publicity efforts, learn technical skills such as editing, using recording equipment, learning and practicing interviewing skills and learning other important life and workforce skills all while addressing challenging problems and looking for creative solutions. City Year presently works with at-risk youth in four Columbus Public Schools to support their graduation from high school through tutoring, mentoring, and after school programs. Youth Beat is partnering with City Year to engage students at one or more of these schools in the production of radio segments as well as provide them with the opportunities to interact with university students who will teach them technical, writing and communication skills. Puffin Foundation West is so excited about these Grants and sees the potential of a forever marriage!
*WCRS is also an historical recipient of Puffin West support and we encourage you to listen to Amy Goodman’s award-winning news program Democracy Now!! every weekday at 5pm
