Statement Against the Anti-Semitic Sttack on the Tree of Life Congregation
The Interfaith Association of Central Ohio and our nine member faith traditions are horrified by the recent anti-Semitic attack that took place against the Tree of Life Jewish Congregation. The attack of any individual or religious community goes against the diverse tenants of our faith traditions and our shared humanity. As people of faith and conscience, we believe that we have a responsibility to lead the world in demonstrating a respect for each person’s right to worship freely, as they see fit, and without the risk of violence. Most places of worship are held to be sacred places and are inherently sanctuaries of peace. Any attack on a place of worship is an attack on the freedom all Americans have to worship freely, and destroys the peace many of us seek through worship. We believe the strong foundation of the United States is built on unity in diversity and that we are stronger as a nation because of the many faith and non-faith perspectives.
The Interfaith Association of Central Ohio has been committed to protecting religious freedom and encouraging interreligious relationship building for more than 30 years. As our country and community have increased in diversity we have worked to bring people of different faith communities together to learn about one another, to share from their religious traditions and to find the common areas from which we can build a stronger community. We have demonstrated that our diverse religious beliefs are a strength for our community and brings us together, rather than driving us apart.
We encourage people of Central Ohio to actively work to support the freedom to worship and to speak against those who profess hatred for any faith tradition or belief. The moral standard we share of respect and tolerance through our various traditions must serve as a guide to our community. We stand in solidarity with our friends in the Jewish community and grieve as if the loss was in our own faith community. The families and friends of all those affected by this tragedy are in our thoughts and prayers.
