HURRY ON DOWN TO THE SPEED MUSEUM

You won’t need to bring your own Southern drawl as the Speed Museum’s exhibition Southern Accent: Seeking the American South In Contemporary Art opens in Lexington, Kentucky on April 29th. Speed logo-web Southern Accent questions and explores the complex and contested space of the American South from the natural beauty of the Southern Landscape and the rich history of cuisine and music, to its complicated legacy of racial violence and injustice.   Part of this exhibition includes the exploration of the shifting meaning of the Confederate flag and monuments. The exhibit will include a performance piece entitled Unraveling by Sonya Clark. She will invite visitors to work with her in the museum to unravel a Confederate flag, thread by thread. This slow and labor-intensive process of unweaving a flag becomes an evocative metaphor for the time and understanding needed to overcome racism in America.   www.speedmuseum.org
