The Indiana Jacobs School of Music will host the Tanguero Summer Institute.  A Tanguero is not merely a musician that performs tango music but is one who is deeply involved in the lyrics, dance and history of this art form. This project will develop tango musicians and will compile educational materials, it will translate materials including videos, documents and texts, and also arrange and adapt music of the golden age of tango.  Working class immigrants created the tango in the slums of Buenos Aires. The intimacy of the dance and the passion of the music continue to teach people everywhere about communication, trust, and the shared human identity.  The dance and the music were brutally repressed in Argentina for over thirty years. It is a deep cultural reservoir, a snapshot of the human experience that is a powerful vehicle for dialogue and self-expression.
