IN SUPPORT OF INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST SHARIF ABDEL KOUDDOUS

THE NATION INSTITUTE is a nonprofit media center dedicated to strengthening the independent press and advancing social justice and civil rights. Their dynamic range of programs includes The Journalism Fellowship Program which enables and supports prominent journalists to write on complex social and political issues facing America and the world. These Fellows, which include PFW’s friend Jeremy Scahill, form a unique community of thinkers and writers, and are energetic contributors to the intellectual life of the country. Puffin Foundation West has provided a Grant to The Nation Institute’s Journalism Fellowship Program in honor of murdered journalist James Foley for the benefit of independent investigative reporter, Sharif Abdel Kouddous.

Mr. Kouddous has reported on the turbulent developments in Egypt, from Baghdad during the Iraq War, New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Haiti in the days after the January 2010 earthquake and during the return of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2011, and the climate summits in Copenhagen and Cochabamba.

He has written for The Nation, Foreign Policy, The Progressive, Al-Ahram Weekly, and Al-Masry Al Youm, and has appeared on numerous national and international TV programs, including MSNBC’s the Rachel Maddow Show, the Ed Schultz Show, Hardball with Chris Matthews, and Al Jazeera English. For eight years he served as a senior producer, co-host, and correspondent for Democracy Now! which is supported locally in Columbus by PFW on community radio station WCRS.

In 2012 Mr. Kouddous was the recipient of the Izzy Award, named for muckraking journalism I.F. Stone, an honor he shared with the Center for Media and Democracy. If you are interested in supporting this fund visit http://www.nationinstitute.org/fellows/b2ap3_thumbnail_sharif-cropped_200.gif
