A Public Interest Grant has been awarded to CCAD. They will be hosting Micah White at a public lecture at the Canzani Center on February 20th @ 6:30. Mr. White is the former editor of Adbusters magazine, an anti-consumerist/anti-advertising publication that blamed the ad industry for the manipulation of consumers. Puffin West sponsored the showing by The Women’s Funds of the 2011 documentary, Miss Representation. This was the quintessential documentary exposing this practice that contributes to the under-representation of women by using often disparaging images of them in mainstream media.

Mr. White is credited with creating the Occupy Wall Street meme, which spread not only across the country in a grassroots fashion but also around the globe in a peaceful fashion.   Mr. White will discuss how an idea that is visualized can be used as a vehicle to carry cultural ideas peaceably and is able to create lasting impressions.   Other Activist Artists supported with Grants from PFW are The Backbone Campaign and Puppet Farm Arts. Mr. White’s visit and lecture is a MUST EVENT for your calendars and seating is limited to 400. He will challenge students to consider and contemplate their obligations and ethics when it comes to how advertising influences our society and our identities. In this election year Mr. White will also address about how advertising effects politics and social movements, as well as how “spin” can br used to hinder action relating to citizens’ concerns, such as the environment.
