PRESCHOOL POETS

Eight excellent short films have been created by seven animators from around the world who were able to communicate a strong sense of story from the poems composed by preschoolers who have attended Columbus Early Learning Centers. A documentary that reveals the context and relevance of the children’s words accompanies the short films. Nancy Kangas, a poet, has been visiting schools and community centers for over 20 years. Ms. Kangas had never written poems with 3-5 year olds before but when introduced to them at the Early Leaning Centers she was struck how children of such young ages were able to express themselves directly and poignantly.   Their words tell what they love, fear, including the violence and poverty in their lives. The film debuted last year at the Wexner Center and as it received much critical attention, it is now being entered into prominent film festivals. The films carry an important and timely message and these children’s powerful voices need to be heard. Ms. Kangas’ mission is to heal the world with art.
