Unleashing Fierce Young Talent on the World

ArtHatch of Escondido, California received a modest Puffin West grant for their work with teens that are drawn to the arts rather than traditional high school activities such a sports and who are often shunned and in the case of gangs they are often sought out and beat up. ArtHatch creates a safe haven and outlet for these kids who find themselves at risk and provides a forum that enables them to become familiar with and appreciate other cultures. This allows them to enter into dialogues about issues from a variety of perspectives especially from those outside the United States and increases their awareness of the world around them. Studies have shown engaging in art and creativity also generates a wide range of positive outcomes, including: Increases in academic achievement; higher graduation rates and college enrollment; improvements in literacy and language abilities; better communication and performance skills; heightened cultural awareness and greater self-esteem.
